India at Tokyo Olympics: Manika storms into 2nd round; Sutirtha fights back to beat higher ranked opponent in Round 1of TT singles

Manika Batra won her singles Round 1 match against Great Britain’s Tin Tin Ho at Tokyo Olympics on Saturday.

Xtra Time Web Desk: India had a good day in Table Tennis as both Manika Batra and Sutirtha Mukherjee won their first round matches in the singles. After the disappointment of mixed doubles, Manika came back strongly to win her singles first round match against Britain’s Tin Tin Ho. Manika will now face Ukraine’s Margaryta’s Pesotska in Round 2 on Sunday.

Manika won the match against Tin Tin Ho in four straight games 11-7, 11-6, 12-10, 11-9 in exactly 30 minutes. She never seemed fazed by Tin-Tin Ho during the whole match. This win will come as a morale booster after she along with Achanta Sharath Kamal failed to qualify for the next round in the mixed doubles event after suffering a heavy 0-4 defeat against the Chinese Taipei team of Yun Ju Lin and Cheng I Ching.

In the other first round women’s singles match of TT, India’s Sutirtha Mukherjee fought back to beat Linda Bergstroem of Sweden 5-11, 11-9, 11-13, 9-11, 11-3, 11-9, 11-5.
