Five Matches in Three Days: India Face Gruelling Test at Inaugural FIFA U15 World Cup

Coached by Bibiano Fernandes, India will play five qualification matches across three days at the Hovsan Competition Complex in Baku. The tournament, scheduled to be held in October, will bring together with participation open to all FIFA Member Associations, 191 national teams have been divided into 32 groups, with 943 matches set to be played across 20 pitches over six competition days.
A packed three-day schedule for India:
India will begin their campaign against Laos on October 24 at 11:45 IST at Pitch 1B.
The schedule gets significantly tougher the following day, with India playing twice. They will face Cameroon at 10:30 IST before taking on Grenada at 17:15 IST, with both matches scheduled at Pitch 1B.
The Blue Colts will then complete the qualification stage with another double-header on October 26. India face Bahrain at 14:15 IST at Pitch 9A before meeting Senegal at 21:00 IST at Pitch 8A.
That means five international matches in just 72 hours, making recovery, squad rotation and adaptability important factors for Fernandes and his young team.
The tournament will not follow the traditional 11-a-side format. All matches will be played 8v8, with two 20-minute halves separated by a five-minute half-time break. Games will be played on a 68m x 50m pitch, while rolling substitutions will be allowed throughout the match. The format is designed to give young players a different competitive experience, with the smaller playing area and shorter matches demanding quick decisions and constant involvement.
The Indian team are currently in camp at the Centre for Sports Excellence in Bengaluru. Before travelling to Azerbaijan, the Blue Colts are also scheduled to play international friendly matches in India. Fernandes will eventually take a final squad of 14 players to Baku for the competition.
The participating teams will arrive in Baku on October 22, followed by an official training day on October 23. The qualification stage will be played from October 24 to 26, with October 27 kept as a rest day. The tournament stage will then take place on October 28 and 29, before the tier finals on October 30.

For India’s young players, the Azerbaijan tournament will offer more than just a chance to compete on a global stage.
