Bhargab Guhathakurta: The Dedicated Coach Working Tirelessly to Unlock the Potential of Jangalmahal's Football Talent

The football community in Bengal is increasingly talking about Jangalmahal and the remarkable work being done at the Vivekananda Sports Academy. At the heart of this initiative is Dr. Prashanta Kumar Mahato, whose vision has drawn the support of former footballer and academic scholar Bhargab Guhathakurta.
Responding to Dr. Mahato's call, Bhargab regularly travels from Kolkata to Purulia, driven by a mission and a dream—to help shape the future of talented young footballers from the region.
Bhargab's own footballing career saw him represent several well-known clubs, including Tollygunge, BNR, Customs, and Howrah Union. Yet football is only one part of his story. A distinguished student, he completed a PhD and earned recognition as a scholar from Jadavpur University. In many ways, he embodies the Bengali saying: "One who cooks can also tie up their hair"—a person capable of excelling in multiple fields simultaneously.
After retiring from playing, Bhargab moved into coaching. He is primarily associated with the Bidhannagar Municipal Sports Academy, while also playing a key role at the Vivekananda Sports Academy in Purulia.

Unlike many coaches who aspire to work with senior teams, Bhargab openly admits that his true passion lies in developing young footballers. His commitment to the tribal footballers of Purulia is particularly strong. He firmly believes that these youngsters possess natural talent, athletic ability, and intelligence. What they often lack is access to advanced training methods and opportunities for holistic development.
It is this belief that motivates his frequent journeys to Purulia.
At the Vivekananda Sports Academy, Bhargab's responsibilities extend far beyond coaching players. He also mentors the academy's coaches, helping them improve their own methods and knowledge. In effect, he serves as a technical director, ensuring that the entire coaching structure develops alongside the players.

His focus is on creating footballers through modern and scientifically structured coaching methods. But his vision goes beyond the football pitch.
Recognizing the importance of communication and education in modern sport, the academy also works on improving the players' spoken English skills. This helps them better understand theoretical concepts, training instructions, and the broader demands of professional football.
Bhargab is equally committed to developing the players' decision-making abilities and football intelligence. He believes that technical skills and physical attributes alone are not enough; players must also learn how to think and adapt within the game.
Looking ahead, he hopes that a major school or educational institution will come forward and partner with the academy, taking responsibility for the education and development of 20 to 25 young players. Such support, he believes, would make the academy's work significantly easier and more effective.
Bhargab's dedication is rooted in a simple conviction: the footballers of Jangalmahal are capable of achieving much more than many people realize. Given the right guidance, education, and opportunities, they can surprise the footballing world and progress to much higher levels.
That belief continues to fuel his regular trips from Kolkata to Purulia.
In an era when many pursue personal success, Bhargab Guhathakurta has chosen a different path—one devoted to nurturing the minds and talents of young footballers. Through his tireless efforts, he is helping transform naturally gifted athletes into complete footballers and, perhaps more importantly, into confident and capable individuals.
