ISL 2024-25: Mohun Bagan avenges Durand final defeat with the ISL victory
Xtra Time Web Desk: Mohun Bagan kicked off their 2024 Indian Super League campaign with a 2-2 draw aginst Mumbai City Fc, but seals their second match with a thrilling 3-2 win against North East United Fc. Featuring several memorable moments: Jamie Maclaren's debut, revenge for their Durand Cup final loss, goals from two Bengali defenders, and a last-minute strike by Jason Cummings at a rain-soaked Salt Lake Stadium on 23rd September, Monday. Fans saw this match as a chance to avenge their Durand final defeat, and despite an early setback, they left the stadium smiling.
This season, Mohun Bagan has fielded a different starting XI in each match, and Monday was no different. Greg Stewart and Dimitri began, while Jason Cummings was on the bench. Jamie Maclaren, too, did not start the match. Unlike the Durand final, where Mohun Bagan took a 2-0 lead in the first half, it was NorthEast United who led 2-1 at halftime.

NorthEast’s Bemanme opened the scoring with a stunning strike from outside the box in the 4th minute, but Mohun Bagan’s young Bengali defender Dipendu Biswas equalized in the 10th minute. NorthEast United, however, regained the lead through Azari’s counterattack goal in the 24th minute.

In the second half, Mohun Bagan pressed for victory. Coach Juan Ferrando added Jason Cummings to the lineup in the second half, and in the 61st minute, captain Subhasish Bose scored from a scramble in the NorthEast United box to equalize. Jamie Maclaren then made his debut, but it was his fellow Australian, Jason Cummings, who emerged as the hero, scoring the decisive goal in the 87th minute to secure Mohun Bagan's 3-2 win. This marked the green and maroon brigade's first victory in the 2024 ISL.
