ISL 2024-25: Brison Fernandes' double seals FC Goa's thrilling win over Mohun Bagan
Xtra Time Web Desk: Local hero Brison Fernandes emerged as the star for FC Goa, scoring twice to lead his team to a thrilling 2-1 victory over table-toppers Mohun Bagan Super Giant in their Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 clash in Margao on Friday. The win, Goa's perfect parting gift for their fans in the final match of 2024, lifted the Gaurs to third place in the standings.
Making his first start in nearly two months, Brison Fernandes combined beautifully with Borja Herrera in both halves to seal full points for the home side. Goa struck in the 12th minute, somewhat against the run of play. Armando Sadiku's clever backheel found Herrera, who carried the ball into the attacking third. Herrera then set up Brison, whose shot deflected heavily off Tom Aldred’s leg before sneaking past Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Vishal Kaith.

Goa almost doubled its lead just before the first cooling break when Sadiku’s smart play drew defenders away, creating space for Mohammed Yasir. Yasir’s left-footed effort, however, was denied by Kaith’s sharp save.
Mohun Bagan had its best opportunity of the first half in the 35th minute, when Alberto Rodriguez’s header off Dimitrios Petratos' corner was brilliantly kept out by Hrithik Tiwari. The visitors came close again when Manvir Singh’s cross found an unmarked Petratos, but the Australian’s shot sailed over the crossbar.
The Mariners finally equalised eight minutes into the second half after a penalty was awarded for Sadiku’s trailing hand catching a cross. Petratos confidently converted the spot-kick, firing into the top corner, leaving Hrithik Tiwari with no chance despite diving the right way.

With the home crowd vocal in their displeasure over the decision, FC Goa regained composure and struck again in the 66th minute. Herrera floated in a pinpoint cross, and an unmarked Brison rose to nod it into the net, sending the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium into raptures.
Mohun Bagan pressed for a late equaliser, but Odei Onaindia’s crucial clearance in the dying moments ensured Goa held on for the win.
The result places FC Goa third with 22 points from 12 games, while Mohun Bagan, suffering just their second loss this season, remains atop with 26 points. Mohun Bagan next faces Punjab FC in New Delhi on December 26, while Goa travels to face Odisha FC on January 4.
