The wait is finally over. Teenage sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi made his senior international debut for India on Saturday against England in the second T20I at Manchester, becoming the youngest player ever to represent India in international cricket.
Before the match, fellow teammate Tilak Varma presented Suryavanshi with his maiden India cap, marking a historic moment in the youngster's career.
In doing so, the 15-year-old broke a 36-year-old record held by Sachin Tendulkar. The legendary batter had made his international debut against Pakistan in 1989 at the age of 16 years and 205 days. Suryavanshi has now surpassed that milestone by making his debut at just 15 years of age.
The youngster had a brief but promising first international outing, scoring 14 runs off 10 balls before being stumped by Jos Buttler off the bowling of Will Jacks. Incidentally, Tendulkar had scored 15 runs from 24 deliveries on his debut before being dismissed by Waqar Younis.
Born in Tajpur, Samastipur, Bihar, in 2011, Suryavanshi has enjoyed a meteoric rise through the ranks. He made his first-class debut at the age of 12 years and 284 days, soon earned a place in India's Under-19 side, and continued to impress with his fearless batting.
His rapid ascent reached another milestone when he was signed by the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL while still just 13 years old. He made his IPL debut at 14 years and 23 days against the Lucknow Super Giants, announcing himself in style by smashing Shardul Thakur for a six off the very first ball he faced.
Suryavanshi's reputation soared even further after he smashed a sensational 35-ball century, registering one of the fastest hundreds in IPL history and cementing his status as one of world cricket's brightest young talents.
Following his remarkable IPL exploits, calls for his inclusion in the senior Indian team grew louder. Cricket experts and fans alike believed his extraordinary talent warranted an immediate opportunity, irrespective of his age.
The selectors eventually included him in India's squad for the Ireland and England series. Although he did not make his debut against Ireland, his long-awaited opportunity arrived in the second T20I against England, where he replaced Sanju Samson in the playing XI.
At an age when most cricketers are still developing their skills in academies, Suryavanshi has already stepped onto the international stage wearing the India jersey. His debut marks the beginning of what many hope will be a remarkable journey.
Thirty-six years ago, Sachin Tendulkar's debut signalled the start of one of the greatest careers in cricket history. On July 4 in Manchester, Indian cricket may have witnessed the first chapter of another extraordinary story.
