Speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma's retirement from international cricket has been put to rest by BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia, who confirmed that the India captain is not set to retire after Sunday's ODI against England at Lord's.
Over the past two days, reports and social media discussions suggested that the Lord's ODI could be Rohit's final international appearance. However, Saikia dismissed the rumours, stating that the matter has neither been discussed by the Board nor has any decision been taken.
"There has been a lot of speculation in the media over the last few days, but the BCCI has not held any discussion on this issue. No decision has been made regarding Rohit's retirement," Saikia clarified.
The BCCI Secretary also emphasized that Rohit remains an integral part of India's ODI setup and continues to feature prominently in the team's future plans.
At present, both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli play only ODI cricket for India, with their primary focus firmly on the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup.
Despite this, discussions have emerged in certain cricketing circles over whether India should begin preparing for the future by promoting Yashasvi Jaiswal as Shubman Gill's opening partner in ODIs. Many believe that if Jaiswal is to play a key role in the 2027 World Cup, he should be given consistent opportunities from now onwards.
It is this debate over India's long-term opening combination that sparked rumours of Rohit's possible retirement at Lord's. However, with the BCCI making its position clear, the veteran opener is expected to continue leading India's ODI plans for the foreseeable future.
