Bumrah targets Ireland tour for comeback while Rahul and Iyer eyes return in Asia Cup

Xtra Time Web Desk: Indian cricket fans have a reason to rejoice as Jasprit Bumrah’s recovery progress is bringing hope for his return to action soon. Following his back surgery, the star fast bowler has begun bowling seven overs a day as part of his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). Although his participation in the forthcoming five-match T20 series against Ireland is uncertain, the upcoming practice matches will play a crucial role in determining his workload management. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) aims to get him fit for the Asia Cup in August, which will serve as preparation for the World Cup.

While the squad for the T20I series against the West Indies is yet to be announced by the Indian selectors, it seems unlikely that Bumrah will be included in that series. However, the subsequent series against Ireland, scheduled for August 18, 20, and 23, is being targeted for his comeback. The Indian team management wants to assess Bumrah’s readiness in T20 matches before considering him for the 50-over format, with the ultimate goal of having him fully prepared for the World Cup through the Asia Cup.

Bumrah has been out of action since September of the previous year due to back problems and subsequent surgery. Currently undergoing rehabilitation at the NCA, he has reportedly achieved a 70% recovery. With approximately two months until the Ireland series, the team management is not only hopeful but also optimistic about his availability. The critical factor for his return lies in his performance in real-time matches, and he is expected to play a few games at the NCA next month. The team intends to assess his response to the workload, particularly the day after a game, before deciding on including him in the Ireland series.

Regarding the Asia Cup 2023, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are on the path to recovery. The BCCI is aiming for their return in the continental tournament, which will act as the perfect warm-up for the World Cup. However, as of now, Rahul is the only likely player, apart from Bumrah, who will make a comeback. Unfortunately, the situation doesn’t look promising for Shreyas Iyer.

The BCCI medical team is concerned that Iyer may not be fit for the World Cup. Consequently, Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson are back in plans for ODIs. These two players excel against spin, just like Iyer. Since World Cup matches will likely be played on spin-friendly pitches, they are being considered. Iyer underwent back surgery after missing the IPL and WTC Final, but he still experiences complaints of back pain.

Currently, both Rahul and Iyer are at the NCA in Bengaluru and have missed the I. If all goes well, Rahul will join the tour to Ireland. Rahul underwent thigh surgery in May, while Shreyas Iyer suffered a back injury and was ruled out of the WTC Final, requiring surgery as well.

Although the month-long break has been beneficial, the two players still have a fair way to go. It is unlikely that Rahul will participate in the NCA’s practice games next month as the BCCI medical team does not want to risk his fitness for the World Cup in October. The plan is to have him fit for the Asia Cup.
