Asian Games 2023: Sunil Chhetri on target as India beat Bangladesh 1-0 to keep knockout hopes alive

Xtra Time Web Desk: Indian football team secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Bangladesh in Asian Games Group A clash on Thursday, rekindling their hopes of progressing in the knockouts. Indian football talisman Sunil Chhetri scored the decisive goal from penalty with just seven minutes left in regular time, swiftly recovering from their disappointing 5-1 defeat to China in their tournament opener.

India started the match energetically, with Bryce Miranda particularly shining on the flanks, delivering dangerous crosses. However, Chhetri’s early shot missed the target. Despite Bangladesh gaining momentum, India’s defense, led by Jhingan and Dheeraj, held firm.

The first half ended with India pressing hard, with three close attempts, including Chhetri’s and Rahul KP’s efforts, saved by the Bangladeshi goalkeeper, keeping the score 0-0.

In the second half, Rahul missed a golden opportunity to break the deadlock, while Dheeraj’s heroics denied Bangladesh a chance in the 77th minute. The turning point came in the 83rd minute when Bryce was fouled in the box, leading to a penalty. Chhetri calmly converted it, giving India the lead.

India’s resolute defence then held firm, securing their first three points of the campaign. Their next match is against Myanmar on September 24, as they continue their quest for Asian Games glory.
