Xtra Time Web Desk: Sunil Chhetri and co. drew 1-1 with Myanmar on Sunday to book a spot in the pre-quarter final of the men’s football in the ongoing Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou. This is the first time in 13 years that India Men’s Football Team has advanced to the knockout stage. The Blue Tigers will now face Saudi Arabia in Round of 16 on Sep 28.

It was India who took the lead in the 23rd minute after talisman Sunil Chhetri scored from a spot kick. Myanmar’s Yan Kyaw Htwe scored the equalizer in the 74th minute. Myanmar started aggressively, but the Indian defence, led by Sandesh Jhingan, stood strong in the first half, repelling Myanmar’s attacks.

Jhingan’s exceptional performance included impeccable tackles and steadfast defending. India gradually found their rhythm and took the lead when Rahim Ali capitalized on a defensive error, earning a penalty that Chhetri converted.

India had chances to extend their lead in the second half, but Myanmar’s goalkeeper made crucial saves. Myanmar pressed on and eventually equalized through Yan Kyaw Htwe’s header in the 74th minute. Despite Myanmar’s late efforts, India’s resilient defense secured their place in the last-16 stage, finishing as runners-up in Group A with more goals scored than Myanmar. They will face Saudi Arabia in the pre-quarter-finals on September 28.
