Asia Cup 2023: Will rain play spoilsport in the final?

Xtra Time Web Desk: The stage is set for the Asia Cup 2023 final between India and Sri Lanka at the R Premadasa stadium here in Colombo on Sunday, September 17. All eyes will be on the weather as there is a forecast of 70-80 percent chances of shower. If rain does play a spoilsport, then the final will be shifted to reserve day on Monday. What happens if the final cannot be completed on the reserve day as well? Both sides will be declared as joint winners of the Asia Cup 2023.

According to weather website Accuweather, the forecast for Sunday is: “Cloudy; a thundershower in parts of the area in the morning followed by a couple of thunderstorms around in the afternoon.” It further adds that there is a 90 per cent probability of precipitation with 54 per cent chances of thunderstorm. Thunderstorms are predicted later in the day.

Already the ongoing continental tournament saw the Super 4 game between India and Pakistan being completed on the reserve day. If the rain affects the match on Sunday, there is a chance of overs getting reduced until the cut-off time after which the game will be shifted to the reserve day. The match will begin on the reserve day from the same point where it had stopped on Sunday.

In there is no play possible on the reserve day as well then both India and Sri Lanka will be declared joint winners. This will not be the first time that two sides are declared as joint winners of a multi-nation tournament in Sri Lanka. Back in 2002, in the Champions Trophy final, India and Sri Lanka were announced as joint winners after rain had washed out the final.
