Will Rohit Sharma come out of T20 exile and lead Indian team in Afghanistan series?

Xtra Time Web Desk: The big question making rounds in Indian cricket is whether Rohit Sharma will come out of his T20I exile and lead the India Team in the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, following the Test series against South Africa. The series against Afghanistan holds significance as it is the last bilateral T20I series before the T20 World Cup 2024.

The selectors face a dilemma with captains Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Ruturaj Gaikwad all sidelined due to injuries. Pandya, the de facto leader in Rohit’s absence, is recovering from an ankle injury sustained in the India versus Bangladesh World Cup match. Suryakumar Yadav and Ruturaj Gaikwad, who also captained the side, are both out with ankle injuries.

With both Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah likely to be rested for the T20I series due to workload management, the only viable option left is Rohit Sharma. Despite being in T20I exile since the T20 World Cup 2022, the selectors and BCCI are considering his return to ensure his leadership ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024.

Rohit did share a hint at his T20I comeback, as he expressed his willingness to play any available cricket during the pre-match press conference ahead of the Boxing Day Test. The Indian squad for the T20I series against Afghanistan is expected to be announced next week.
