1st Ashes Test, Day 2: Usman Khawaja lead Australia’s fightback with a brilliant hundred

Xtra Time Web Desk: Usman Khawaja scored his first test ton on English soil as Australia fightback on 311/5, trailing by 82 runs at stumps on Day 2 of the first Ashes test at Edgbaston. Khawaja is not out on 118 along with Alex Carey batting on 52*.

Earlier, Moeen Ali dismissed Travis Head and Cameron Green while Stuart Broad got the better off David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne in consecutive balls to put England in control before Ben Stokes got better of Steve Smith.

Australia was in a spot at 67/3 but thanks to the partnership between Khawaja and Travis Head (50) as they added 81 runs to restore the innings. Alex Carey and Khawaja has so far been involved in a partnership of 91 runs. It was a superb effort from Khawaja as he played a perfect test cricket knock. He played 279 balls during his knock, hitting 14 boundaries and two sixes.

On Day 1, Joe Root remained not out on 118 as England declared their first innings at 393 for 8. For Australia, Nathan Lyon was the pick of the bowlers with a four-wicket haul while Josh Hazlewood picked two. England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and opted to bat at Edgbaston in Birmingham.
