The former East Bengal maestro had been suffering from the deadly disease of cancer. He also got the lifetime achievement award from his beloved club East Bengal in 2012. He was also crowned as the Kolkata Sherrif in 2009 and was the sheriff till Utpal Chatterjee took over in January, 2010. Former East Bengal captain and national team coach passed away this morning at the age of 75 after prolonged sickness. He passed away at a hospital in Kolkata at 7:20 a.m. Mitra had been the coach of the Indian team many times and was part of the East Bengal team which still holds the record of winning six season in a row in the Calcutta Football League.
He used to play as a Left Back. He was the captain of the East Bengal team in 1970, the year the club beat famous Pas Club of Iran in IFA Shield final. He also played for the club from 1965 - 1973. He represented India in the Merdeka Tournament in 1968.
Mitra played an instrumental role during the 1984 Nehru Cup when he was the assistant coach along with Karnataka’s Amjad Khan. Many in the football fraternity believe that the success Yugoslavian coach Milovan Ciric achieved in 1984 was due to Mitra and Amjad’s support.
He was also the manager of the side at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic qualifiers. Mitra was the football project director during the 2002 Asian Games.The news has indeed brought a huge cloud of sorrow in Indian football fraternity. Former Indian captain Biswajit Bhattacharya said to www.xtratime.in , "He was a gentleman.  A great human being and a fine coach. I haven't seen him playing but heard he was a great football too. We had a family friendship with his family. No doubt it's a big loss for Indian football. May his soul rest in peace. I will be going to his place to see him for the very last time."
