The previous night, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé had set the FIFA World Cup alight with their performances. Naturally, there was great anticipation surrounding another global superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo. However, it was Portugal who ended up rattled, as they were held to a 1-1 draw by DR Congo, who secured a historic point.

Portugal made the perfect start, taking the lead early in the match. A superb cross from the left flank by Pedro Neto was met by a brilliant header from João Neves, who found the back of the net. DR Congo responded in similar fashion, equalizing with an excellent header from Wissa. Yet questions remain about Portugal’s defending—how was Wissa allowed so much space inside the box? Not a single Portuguese defender was close enough to challenge him.

This was not an isolated incident. Throughout the game, the Congolese players launched rapid counterattacks that repeatedly exposed Portugal’s defense. Every time DR Congo surged forward, the Portuguese backline appeared vulnerable and unsettled. Portugal are considered one of the favorites for the tournament, but if they struggle so badly against Congo’s pace and directness, concerns about tougher challenges ahead are inevitable. Head coach Roberto Martínez certainly has plenty to think about.

DR Congo’s disciplined and organized football caused Portugal all sorts of problems. On this evidence, Portugal hardly looked like one of the tournament favorites. Martínez’s side produced a largely average performance, lacking the incisive passes needed to break through defensive lines in dangerous areas. As a result, they created few clear-cut chances, and Ronaldo often found himself isolated with limited service.

Even so, Cristiano Ronaldo had an opportunity to score but failed to make the most of it with his finishing.

For DR Congo, the result was historic. The team not only scored its first-ever World Cup goal but also earned its first point in the competition’s history. Meanwhile, Portugal’s players wore black wristbands before the match in tribute to Diogo Jota. Yet by the final whistle, their emotions were weighed down even further—not by remembrance alone, but by growing concern and uncertainty.

With Argentina, Germany, and France all making impressive starts to their campaigns, Portugal know they must improve significantly if they are to keep pace with the tournament’s leading contenders. And perhaps no one understands that better than Roberto Martínez himself
