XtraTime Newsdesk: Brazilian football superstar Neymar has stepped forward to support the victims of the devastating earthquake in Venezuela. According to Venezuelan news outlet El Sumario, the forward has donated USD 250,000 to assist with emergency rescue operations and humanitarian relief efforts.
The report states that the funds will be used to provide food, clean drinking water, medical supplies, and temporary shelter for those affected by the disaster. Neymar was quoted as saying My heart goes out to the people of Venezuela. I hope this small contribution brings some strength and comfort to the families affected during this difficult time.
According to CNN, citing Venezuelan National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez, two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 struck the country on Wednesday, killing at least 1,430 people. Another 3,238 people were injured, while 3,142 families have been displaced after losing their homes.
Rescue teams continue to search for survivors trapped beneath the rubble. However, ongoing aftershocks and a shortage of heavy rescue equipment have significantly slowed operations, reducing the chances of finding more survivors as time passes.
Meanwhile, there is encouraging news on the football front. Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that Neymar is making rapid progress in his recovery from injury and is now capable of playing significantly longer than before.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Ancelotti said
Neymar has improved remarkably over the past week. Previously, he couldn't play more than 15 minutes, but now he's in a condition to stay on the pitch for much longer.
The 34-year-old forward missed Brazil's opening two FIFA World Cup matches due to injury but made his return as a second-half substitute in the Seleção's 3-0 victory over Scotland.
Brazil have also secured qualification for the knockout stage as Group C winners. In doing so, the five-time world champions have topped their World Cup group for a remarkable 12th consecutive tournament. Since 1982, Brazil have finished first in their group at every FIFA World Cup, underlining their extraordinary consistency and dominance on the international stage.
