Netherlands star and Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo and his partner, Noa van der Bij, have announced the heartbreaking loss of their unborn child. The couple shared the devastating news in an emotional statement on social media on Saturday.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Noa van der Bij wrote:

"With broken hearts, we share that our little boy passed away during pregnancy before he could enter this world. Thank you for all your love and support. Elijah Raphael Gakpo—forever our beloved child, forever our son."

Gakpo also shared a brief message on his social media accounts, asking for privacy during this difficult time.

"This is an incredibly difficult time for our family. We kindly ask that you respect our privacy and allow us the time and space to grieve. Thank you for your understanding."

The tragic news comes as the Netherlands continue their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign. Gakpo started in the Dutch side's 3-1 victory over Tunisia in their final group-stage match, a result that secured top spot in Group F and a place in the knockout stage.

Ahead of the Netherlands' crucial clash against Morocco, messages of support and condolences have poured in from across the football world. Fans, teammates, and football organizations have taken to social media to express their sympathy and offer their support to Gakpo and his family during this deeply difficult period.
