The veteran Dronacharya wrestler showered his praise on the versatile Bollywood actor for portraying his role to perfection. In a chat with xtratime.in from his residence in Bhiwani, Mahavir Singh Phogat shared his feelings about Aamir. “I must confess I never felt any flaws in the way Aamir Khan played my character in the film. It was like going to flashback while watching the film. It was so perfectly portrayed in the film. I was touched with the dedication of Aamir. He is a true perfectionist.” The meeting of Mahavir Singh Phogat with Aamir dates back to a couple of years ago in 2014. Aamir after interviewing Geeta and Babita on his talk show ‘Satyamev Jayate’ decided to meet their father. It was the first time that the idea of making a film on the champion wrestlers and their father struck him. Together with Director Nitesh Tiwary, Aamir visited Mahavir Singh Phogat at his residence. ‘I came to know about Aamir’s plans to do a film on wrestling by reading in the newspapers. Both Nitesh Tiwary and Aamir Khan visited our place three to four times. They read out the script in front of me to check if there was anything that needs to be edited. I was amazed to see the sense of respect in Aamir. He was so humble even after being so successful.” The film ‘Dangal’ chronicles the journey of a father who trains his daughters against all odds to shape them as champion wrestlers. The Phogat family has already seen the film and has given their thumbs up. According to Mahavir, “I have watched the film. All the important happenings in my life have been projected in the film. All the characters in the film have played their part well.” Talking about Aamir’s dedication to strive for the best, Mahavir said, “Once he took several re-takes to shoot a sequence of training in the akhada. He hired a foreign coach to train on wrestling. He was extremely passionate about every sequence of the film.” Mahavir also spoke about how he was influenced by the efforts of Karnam Malleswari, when he became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in 2000. “That was the time when I first thought about getting my daughters into wrestling. For a moment I thought if she can win a medal why not my daughters?” Mahavir was also influenced by his coach Chandgir Ram who always suggested him to send his daughters to train at the akhada. Asked about the most talented among his four daughters, Mahavir mentioned Babita’s name. “I feel Babita is more talented than the other three. Geeta has also done well and hardworking.” Recently Geeta was appointed Deputy Superintendent of Police by Haryana Government following her Gold medal win in 2010 Commonwealth Games. The Phogat family is disappointed with the recognition coming so late. “It would have been nice had she (Geeta) got the reward when she got the medal. But nevertheless we are happy that she got her dues at last and we thank the Haryana Government for it.” The trailer of the movie was released on Thursday amidst huge response in the social media. The film will hit the theatres on December 23 across the country. It goes to be seen how Aamir Khan (Mahavir Singh Phogat in Dangal) can inspire more and more women to take up the sport which is growing by a day.
