Xtra Time Web Desk: Former India opening batters Gautam Gambhir and WV Raman have been interviewed for the prestigious role of India’s men’s cricket team head coach. The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), chaired by Ashok Malhotra, conducted virtual interviews with the candidates on Tuesday morning.

- WV Raman: Joining from Bengaluru, Raman presented his extensive coaching credentials, which include leading the India Women’s team, a long tenure at the National Cricket Academy, and various roles with state sides and as an IPL batting coach.

- Gautam Gambhir: Participating virtually, Gambhir is currently the team mentor for Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2022 and 2023. He recently guided Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in the same capacity last month.

The CAC, comprising Malhotra, Sulakshana Naik, and Jatin Paranjape, was reportedly impressed by both candidates' presentations. Raman’s rich coaching background made him a strong contender, but Gambhir has emerged as the front-runner to succeed Rahul Dravid. His recent success with Kolkata Knight Riders and his strategic insights have garnered support within the BCCI hierarchy and the CAC, despite his limited coaching experience beyond the T20 format.

The BCCI initiated the search for a new head coach in May, offering a three-and-a-half-year term starting July 1. Gambhir has been considered a top candidate since informal discussions with BCCI officials during the IPL Playoffs. His leadership and recent accomplishments in the IPL have positioned him favorably for the role.

In addition to the head coach interviews, the CAC also considered candidates for a national selector’s post. Mithun Manhas, Ajay Ratra, and Reetinder Singh Sodhi were among the shortlisted candidates interviewed. Salil Ankola is expected to step down, making room for a new selector from the north zone, with Manhas being a strong contender.

As the BCCI moves closer to finalizing the new head coach, Gambhir appears poised to take on the role, bringing his tactical acumen and recent success in the IPL to the national team. The official announcement is eagerly awaited by the cricketing community.
