Xtra Time Web Desk: Shreyas Iyer showcased a stunning performance for Mumbai in the fourth round of the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy, scoring a remarkable 233 off 228 balls against Odisha at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy in Mumbai. His commanding innings featured 24 fours and nine sixes, marking his highest first-class score and reinforcing his place among Mumbai’s elite.

Resuming on his overnight score of 152*, Iyer continued his aggressive form from Day 1, reaching his double century in just 201 balls and easily surpassing his previous best of 202. Entering the crease with Mumbai at 154/3, Iyer joined forces with Siddesh Lad, and the pair forged an impressive 354-run partnership for the fourth wicket, propelling Mumbai beyond the 500-run mark. Lad also secured his ninth first-class hundred, adding to Odisha’s woes on the field.

This innings was Iyer’s second consecutive century in the tournament, following a brilliant 142 against Maharashtra. Notably, it was his first first-class century since his Test debut ton in 2021 against New Zealand in Kanpur, ending a nearly three-year drought.

Iyer's domestic season has been turbulent, with a series of low scores in the Duleep Trophy and Irani Cup, and even a duck in Mumbai’s opening Ranji match against Baroda. After missing Mumbai’s previous game against Tripura for rest, he returned with this extraordinary double hundred, signaling a resurgence in form. Having lost his place in the Indian Test squad and his BCCI central contract earlier this year, Iyer’s recent performances are a significant boost as he aims to reclaim his spot on the national team.

A Timely Reminder to the Selectors

With the BGT fast approaching, Iyer’s consecutive hundred and double hundred act as a timely reminder to the selectors. His form puts pressure on India’s current middle-order batsmen, and if his performances continue, it might lead the selectors to re-evaluate their lineup.

India's middle order, while strong, has shown signs of inconsistency, especially in challenging conditions. Iyer’s adaptability and experience could be the key to adding depth to India’s batting lineup. His potential inclusion would also bring more right-left combination options for the team, especially useful in countering Australia’s bowling tactics.

Eyes on the Border-Gavaskar Trophy

The 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy holds great significance, not just because of the fierce rivalry but also as it forms a key part of India’s campaign in the new World Test Championship cycle. India will host Australia, looking to continue their winning streak on home soil, and Iyer’s availability as a solid middle-order anchor could play a crucial role in the team’s strategies.

For Iyer, the chance to feature in the BGT would mark a pivotal moment in his career, as he seeks to establish himself as a dependable Test player after proving his mettle in limited-overs formats. His recent centuries have made his intentions clear: he’s ready to perform on the big stage.
