Xtra Time Web Desk: India’s captain Rohit Sharma confirmed that wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant was hit on the same knee that underwent surgery earlier in 2023, raising concerns about his fitness for the remainder of the first Test against New Zealand. Pant, who had just returned to Test cricket after recovering from a serious car accident in 2022, was struck during the evening session on Day 2 of the Bengaluru Test.

The incident occurred when Ravindra Jadeja delivered a ball that Devon Conway missed while advancing down the wicket. Pant, unable to gather the ball cleanly, took a direct hit to his right knee. The physio rushed to assist him, and after a brief assessment, Pant was helped off the field in visible discomfort. Dhruv Jurel stepped in to take over wicketkeeping duties for the rest of the day.

During the post-match press conference, Rohit provided an update on Pant’s condition. "Unfortunately, the ball struck the knee he had surgery on, causing some swelling and tenderness. It’s a precautionary measure, and we’re hopeful he’ll recover overnight and be fit to play tomorrow," Rohit stated.

The Indian skipper emphasized that the team was being cautious, considering Pant’s recent injury history, and didn’t want to take any unnecessary risks with his health. "Rishabh didn’t want to take a chance, and we fully support that decision," Rohit added.
