Emami East Bengal FC secures Hijazi Maher until 2025-26 Season
Xtra Time Web Desk: Emami East Bengal FC is thrilled to announce the extension of defensive stalwart Hijazi Maher’s contract until the end of the 2025-26 season. The 26-year-old Jordanian, one of the standout defenders in Indian football last season, was honored as the Best Defender during East Bengal’s triumphant Kalinga Super Cup 2024 campaign.
Commenting on the contract extension, Mr. Vibhash Vardhan Agarwal of Emami Group expressed, “Hijazi has been our defensive cornerstone and played a crucial role in our Kalinga Super Cup victory. Head Coach Carles Cuadrat added, “Hijazi is integral to our defensive framework, boasting exceptional stats in clearances, aerial duels, and interceptions. His defensive solidity was key to our record defensive performance in the ISL. Despite receiving offers from other clubs, Hijazi chose to stay and support our AFC campaign and other significant competitions.”
Since joining the Red & Gold Brigade in September last year, Hijazi has logged 1,938 minutes across 22 matches (17 in the ISL and 5 in the Kalinga Super Cup). The left-footed defender’s impressive stats from the last ISL season include the second-highest clearances (99), second-highest headed clearances (58), and second-most blocks (22). Notably, he set a record for the most clearances in a single ISL match with 14 against Mumbai City FC. Adding to his defensive prowess, Hijazi also scored two goals in the Kalinga Super Cup.
