Xtra Time Web Desk: New Zealand cricket faces a major blow ahead of their Test series against India, with star batter Kane Williamson likely to miss the opening part of the tour due to a groin injury. The injury, sustained during the second Test against Sri Lanka, has ruled Williamson out of the initial matches, and he will remain in New Zealand for rehabilitation. This was confirmed by New Zealand selector Sam Wells, who emphasized the need for caution in Williamson's recovery.

"The advice we've received is that the best course of action is for Kane to rest and rehabilitate now, rather than risk aggravating the injury," Wells said.

Williamson's absence further complicates matters for New Zealand, who are under pressure following a string of poor results in Test cricket, including a recent 2-0 series defeat to Sri Lanka. While the team remains hopeful that their star player might return later in the series, missing him in the early stages is a significant setback as they prepare to face a strong Indian side on home turf.

To fill the void left by Williamson, uncapped all-rounder Mark Chapman has been called up. Chapman, who has excelled in white-ball cricket and is regarded as a solid player of spin, is expected to bolster the middle order, especially against India’s formidable spin attack. "We believe Mark is one of our best players of spin and has a proven track record in the subcontinent," said Wells.

Adding to the team’s woes, all-rounder Michael Bracewell will only be available for the first Test in Bengaluru before returning home for the birth of his second child. India-born leg-spinner Ish Sodhi will replace Bracewell for the remaining two Tests in Pune and Mumbai, bringing his subcontinent experience to the squad.

Opener Tom Latham will lead the Black Caps after Tim Southee stepped down as captain following their poor showing in Sri Lanka. New Zealand, still seeking their first-ever Test series win in India, face a challenging task as they try to break their losing streak in the longest format.
