Xtra Time Web Desk: India faced a potential setback ahead of the second T20I against England as star opener Abhishek Sharma reportedly twisted his ankle during a catching drill at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday. The incident occurred during the team's practice session, as reported by PTI.

The 24-year-old opener was immediately attended to by the Indian team physiotherapist on the field. After the initial treatment, Abhishek limped back to the dressing room, where he spent over 30 minutes with the physio. He did not return to the nets for batting practice.

Abhishek's potential absence could be a significant blow for India, given his explosive form in the ongoing series. He smashed a scintillating 79-run knock in the first T20I in Kolkata, helping India secure a dominant seven-wicket win. Partnering with Sanju Samson at the top, Abhishek has been instrumental in providing India aggressive starts since their successful campaign at the 2024 T20 World Cup.

If Abhishek is ruled out of Saturday's match, India may bring in Washington Sundar or Dhruv Jurel as replacements. In such a scenario, Tilak Varma is likely to be promoted to open alongside Samson.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Shami, who was rested for the first match, had an intense bowling session in the nets at Chepauk on the eve of the game. The veteran pacer focused on regaining his rhythm, working closely with fielding coach T Dilip during throwing drills before hitting the bowling nets.

Shami was initially expected to feature in the opening T20I but was left out, with India opting for Arshdeep Singh as their sole specialist pacer. With India leading the five-match series 1-0, the team management might consider including Shami for the crucial Chennai clash.

The second T20I promises to be an exciting contest as India looks to build on their strong start, while England aims to bounce back and level the series.
