Xtra Time Web Desk: Team India captain Rohit Sharma has expressed confidence in KL Rahul's ability to shine in the forthcoming Test season. Rahul, who last played in the first Test against England in Hyderabad, where he scored 86 before being sidelined by injury, has struggled with consistency in red-ball cricket since 2022. His performance during the Bangladesh tour and the home series against Australia was notably below par, accumulating just 125 runs in ten innings at an average of 12.5, with a highest score of 23. However, he redeemed himself with a gritty century in South Africa in December 2023.

Rohit Sharma addressed Rahul's ups and downs in his career, emphasizing that fluctuations are a natural part of any cricketer’s journey. “There are a handful of cricketers who have had a smooth ride throughout their careers. Everyone experiences highs and lows. The key is to understand oneself and what is expected to contribute to the team,” Rohit said in the pre-match press conference ahead of the first Test against Bangladesh, starting September 19 in Chennai.

Rohit acknowledged Rahul’s recent form and reiterated the team's support for him. “KL Rahul has shown his quality, particularly with his performance in South Africa and the first Test against England. We want him to play all the games and bring his best. It’s our responsibility to help him achieve that,” Rohit added.

The India skipper expressed hope that Rahul will continue his form from Hyderabad, praising his technique against both spin and pace. “We need to provide him with a clear message and support. He has the game to succeed against both spin and seamers, and I believe he can excel in Test cricket. It’s crucial for him to understand how he wants to progress in his career,” Rohit concluded.

KL Rahul has played 50 Test matches, scoring 2,863 runs at an average of 34.08, with eight centuries and 14 fifties. The 32-year-old is looking to build on his recent performances, including a half-century in the Duleep Trophy, as he faces competition from Sarfaraz Khan, who impressed in his absence during the series against England.
