ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Which 7 records Virat Kohli can break against New Zealand?
Xtra Time Web Desk: After scoring a century against Pakistan, Virat Kohli now sets his sights on New Zealand. The Indian stalwart has a chance to break seven records in the upcoming match, provided he plays another big innings. The match will also mark Kohli's 300th appearance in ODI cricket. Here’s a look at the records he could break:
Most runs for India in Champions Trophy
Kohli is within reach of breaking Shikhar Dhawan’s record for most runs by an Indian in the Champions Trophy. Dhawan scored 701 runs in 10 matches, followed by Sourav Ganguly with 665 runs in 13 games. Kohli currently has 651 runs in 15 matches. He needs just 15 runs to surpass Ganguly and 51 runs to overtake Dhawan’s record.
Most runs in Champions Trophy history
West Indies’ Chris Gayle holds the record for the most runs in Champions Trophy history with 791 runs in 17 matches. Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene follows with 742 runs. Kohli, currently in seventh place, is 141 runs behind Gayle. If he scores 142 runs against New Zealand, he will become the highest run-scorer in the tournament’s history.

Most runs against New Zealand in ODIs
Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for most runs against New Zealand in ODIs, scoring 1,750 runs in 42 matches. Kohli, with 1,645 runs in 31 matches, is not far behind. A knock of 106 runs will see him surpass Tendulkar. However, the all-time record against New Zealand across all teams is held by Ricky Ponting, who amassed 1,971 runs in 51 matches. Kohli needs 326 more runs to claim that milestone.
Most ODI centuries against New Zealand
Kohli, Virender Sehwag, and Ricky Ponting share the record for the most centuries against New Zealand in ODIs, with six each. A century in the upcoming match would make Kohli the sole record holder.
Most fifties in ICC tournaments
Kohli has registered five fifties and one century in the Champions Trophy. Across all ICC tournaments, he has 23 scores of fifty or more, equaling Tendulkar. Another fifty-plus score on Sunday will see him claim the record outright. Additionally, Kohli has six fifties or more in the Champions Trophy, a record shared with Dhawan, Ganguly, and Rahul Dravid. Another half-century will put him ahead.

Second-highest run-scorer in ODI history
Sachin Tendulkar leads the all-time ODI run charts with 18,426 runs in 463 matches. Kumar Sangakkara is second with 14,234 runs in 404 games. Kohli, currently at 14,085 runs in 299 matches, needs 150 runs to surpass Sangakkara and become the second-highest run-scorer in ODI history.
Most catches in ODIs (non-wicketkeeper)
As a fielder, Kohli also has a chance to move up the all-time ODI catching charts. Mahela Jayawardene leads with 218 catches in 448 matches. Ricky Ponting is second with 160 catches in 375 games, while Kohli sits third with 158 catches in 299 matches. Taking three catches on Sunday will see Kohli overtake Ponting.
With history beckoning, all eyes will be on Virat Kohli as he takes the field against New Zealand.
