Xtra Time Web Desk: Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has refused to weigh in on Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed’s controversial remarks about Rohit Sharma’s captaincy. Instead, he steered clear of political debates, focusing solely on cricket and the ongoing discourse on fitness in the sport.

Gavaskar distances himself from controversy

Addressing the controversy, Gavaskar made it clear that he had no interest in engaging with political narratives surrounding Rohit. Speaking to India Today, he stated:

"You said political, so to ask me, who's been completely apolitical… honestly, I think there are so many people who will have so many things to say about cricket and cricketers. It’s been there for such a long time, and I don’t think I’m going to react to what A or B or C or D says."

When questioned about Shama Mohamed’s claim that Rohit is an unimpressive captain, Gavaskar pointed to his achievements—leading India to the 2023 ODI World Cup final, winning the T20 World Cup 2024, and securing five IPL titles with Mumbai Indians.

"His results speak for themselves. As a leader, he's done what is expected of him on the field," Gavaskar remarked.

‘Performance matters, not body size’

Amid debates over Rohit's fitness, Gavaskar dismissed concerns about weight and appearance, insisting that true fitness should be measured by on-field performance. He highlighted how cricket during his playing days prioritized stamina over gym-based training.

"Fitness mattered during our time as well. But we weren’t in that mindset where you had to be slim and trim. The bat should do the talking, the ball should do the talking, and the results will be seen," he asserted.

Gavaskar’s remarks reinforce the idea that cricketing success is defined by skill and endurance, not body aesthetics.
