ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Fresh blow for Team India, Bumrah's full fitness doubtful for mega event
Xtra Time Web Desk: Team India's hopes of winning the ICC Champions Trophy in Dubai have taken a significant hit, with reports suggesting that Jasprit Bumrah's chances of achieving full fitness for the tournament appear slim. The ace pacer has been grappling with a persistent back injury since the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney and might require a "miracle" to be ready in time.
Bumrah has reportedly been in regular contact with Dr. Rowan Schouten in New Zealand, who previously operated on him after a similar injury sidelined him during the 2022 T20 World Cup. While plans for Bumrah to visit New Zealand for treatment are underway, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is simultaneously working on contingency plans.

According to a Times of India report, the selectors are considering Harshit Rana and Mohammed Siraj as potential backups. Harshit, currently part of the ODI squad for the England series, could be a key option if Bumrah fails to recover within the given timeline.
“The BCCI medical team is in touch with Schouten in New Zealand. While plans for Bumrah’s visit are being finalized, the timeline is tight, and the selectors are aware that it will take a miracle for him to achieve 100% fitness,” a BCCI source told TOI.

The board is exercising caution, with Bumrah being advised to avoid rigorous physical activity to prevent aggravating the injury. "The feedback from New Zealand will determine the next steps, but no one wants to rush his recovery considering his long-term importance," added the source.
The BCCI can modify India’s Champions Trophy squad until February 11, leaving a narrow window for final decisions. Whether Bumrah will make a remarkable recovery or the selectors will pivot to their backup plans remains to be seen.
