Who are in the race to become the new coach of Indian cricket team?
Kolkata: We all know that Supreme Court appointed BCCI CoA on Tuesday issued an official advertisement, inviting applications for support staff of India Men’s Team. In the coach selection category the applicant must has a work experience of two years of coaching with a test playing nation or he would have a work experience of three with an ICC associated cricket playing nation or an IPL team. And most importantly he would have to be less than 60 years of age. The applicant must also had played 30 Test matches and 50 ODI matches for his country. In the support staff category the applicants must also have to be less than 60 years of age and they have to fulfill the same other criterias except the international matches. For the applicants of the support staffs they should have the experience of playing at least 10 test matches & 25 ODIs in their career.
The main problem for BCCI is that their Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly & VVS Laxman have already stepped aside from their post as they were under scanner of CoA due to conflict of interest as they are a part of a few IPL teams. Now the whole process of selecting the head coach process is upon Saba Karim who is currently working as BCCI Cricket Operation Manager. His first job is to select the Members of the Cricket Advisory Committee. After that the Committee will work together to select India’s next new head coach.
As per sources it has been learnt that the trio of Kapil Dev, Anshuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy are favourites to be handed the responsibility of picking the head coach of the men’s team. Interestingly, the trio had appointed W.V. Raman as the women’s coach after the official Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) - comprising of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and V.V.S Laxman - had sought more time and clarity in the aftermath of the women’s World T20 fiasco. But there is another problem here as Kapil Dev & Shantha Rangaswamy are the director of players association which also a post of BCCI. Now it’s interesting to see that if they also got into conflict of interest for that reason. But currently we can see that there is more problem in BCCI about who will be the men to decide the future coach of India.
On the other hand as per sources last time’s applicant former Aussie cricketer Tom Moody who applied twice for the post will going to apply again for the post. Beside that India’s former World Cup winning coach Gary Kirsten too can apply for the top job. After India won the World Cup back in 2011 Gary Kirsten left the coach’s post as he said he want to give more time to his family. After that he was a coach of Indian Premier League outfit Royal Challengers Bangalore for quite some time. Beside that the BCCI may pick a spinner as the bowing coach this time for the team. And as per sources former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori may apply for the post. On the other hand the current head coach Ravi Shastri and other support staff like Bharat Arun, batting coach Sanjay Bangar and fielding coach R Sridhar will be automatically eligible for reapplication if they so wish. But there is one thing everyone needs to know that Arun, Bangar & Sridhar will definitely fail to pass the criteria as they didn’t have much experience with their national team.
Mostly these are the speculations and we will know a lot more thing after 30th July which is the last date of submitting the application.
