Xtra Time Web Desk: English commentator Isa Guha issued an apology after her controversial "primate" remark about Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah went viral during Day 2 of the Gabba Test. The incident occurred while Guha was praising Bumrah's stellar performance in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he secured his second 5-wicket haul of the series.

Guha referred to Bumrah as the "MVP, Most Valuable Primate," while highlighting his crucial role in India's bowling attack. However, the term sparked backlash on social media, with fans condemning the choice of words as inappropriate. In this context, back in 2008, Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds had alleged that Harbhajan Singh had called him a 'monkey' during a match in Sydney. Isa seemed to have revived that controversy once again. The former England cricketer's comments sparked a storm of criticism, which added another layer to the incident. However, in the end, Isa was forced to bow down to the pressure.

 On-air apology by Isa Guha

Ahead of Day 3 of the Gabba Test, Guha addressed the controversy during a live broadcast on Fox Cricket, expressing regret for any unintended offense caused. She clarified that her intentions were to celebrate Bumrah's excellence but acknowledged her mistake in word choice.

In her statement, Guha said:

"Yesterday in commentary, I used a word that can be interpreted in a number of different ways. I'd like to apologise for any offence caused. I set myself really high standards when it comes to empathy and respect for others."

She emphasized her admiration for Bumrah, describing him as one of India's greatest players and a source of inspiration. Guha, who is of South Asian heritage, reassured viewers that there was no malice behind her comment.

 Ravi Shastri supports Guha

Following Guha's apology, Indian cricket legend Ravi Shastri commended her for her "brave" response to the controversy. He also revealed that the Indian team had taken no offense to the comment, underscoring their focus on the ongoing Test match.

The Gabba Test has been a gripping contest, with Bumrah leading India's bowling attack despite limited support from the other end. Guha's apology aimed to ensure that the incident does not detract from the remarkable cricket on display.
