BGT 2024-25: Nitish Reddy to debut in Perth Test? Morne Morkel hints at all-rounder's inclusion
Xtra Time Web Desk: India's bowling coach, Morne Morkel, has strongly hinted at a potential Test debut for 21-year-old all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy in the series opener against Australia in Perth. The seam-bowling all-rounder from Andhra Pradesh has been making waves with his performances in 2024 and looks set to take the field in the grueling five-Test series.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Morkel praised Reddy's versatility, describing him as a reliable option to support the pace attack. "He [Nitish Reddy] is one of the young guys with all-round ability. He'll be one guy who can hold one end up for us, especially for the first couple of days," Morkel said. "[He's a] wicket-to-wicket bowler. Any team in the world would want an all-rounder who can help pacers. It'll be on Jasprit [Bumrah] how he uses them. Definitely a guy to keep an eye on in the series."

Reddy's journey to the Test stage
Nitish Reddy's rise to prominence began with an impressive IPL season earlier this year, followed by his T20I debut. Despite having only 23 first-class matches under his belt, his ability to deliver medium pace and contribute vital lower-order runs addresses India's long-standing need for a genuine seam-bowling all-rounder in overseas conditions.
During India's A tour of Australia, Reddy showcased his adaptability, maintaining a tight economy rate in most innings. While his numbers weren't extraordinary, the experience of bowling in Australian conditions was invaluable. His partnerships with Dhruv Jurel during the tour further highlighted his reliability as a batter.
Reddy bolstered his case during pre-series simulations at the WACA, impressing the management with his consistency and adaptability on seam-friendly tracks.

Strengthening India's combination
India is expected to field three specialist pacers, a spinner, and an all-rounder for the Perth Test. If Reddy makes his debut, he could serve as the fourth seamer, complementing Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Akashdeep. His inclusion may allow India to balance the playing XI, alleviating the selection dilemma between Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, and Ravichandran Ashwin.
The Optus Stadium's green-top conditions are expected to favor seamers, making Reddy's role crucial. Meanwhile, Ashwin is likely to target Australia's left-handers, including Usman Khawaja and Travis Head, with his spin prowess.
A potential debut for Nitish Kumar Reddy not only strengthens India's team balance but also provides a glimpse into the future of India's Test setup. If selected, the young all-rounder will have a golden opportunity to shine on one of cricket's biggest stages.
