Former India opener Gautam Gambhir feels Rohit Sharma should be made the T20I captain for India.

Xtra Time Web Desk: Former India opener Gautam Gambhir on Wednesday supported the views of Michael Vaughan, as the left hander feels Rohit Sharma should immediately be promoted as the full time captain for India in T20 format. Gambhir believes it will be a “shame” and “Indian cricket’s misfortune” if Rohit Sharma is not promoted for the full-time white-ball captaincy going forward.

“If Rohit Sharma doesn’t become India’s captain, it’s their loss, not Rohit’s,” Gambhir said.“Yes, a captain is only as good as his team and I completely agree with that, but what are the parameters to judge a captain on who is good and who isn’t? The parameters and benchmark should be the same. Rohit has led his team to five IPL titles,” Gambhir said in an interview to ESPNcricinfo.

Another former India opener Virender Sehwag too joined his opening partner Gambhir in declaring that Rohit Sharma is the best captain in T20 format. The former dashing opener tweeted, “Ab to aadat si hai sabko aise dhone ki. The best T20 franchise in the world and the best captain in the format. Deserving winners , Mumbai Indians, koi shak. Amazingly well organised tournament despite various challenges.”

The Hirtman is arguably the best captain in the history of the cash rich league as he has now led Mumbai Indians to its fourth IPL title. In addition Rohit’s record in T20 tournaments is ominous, winning 10 out of 11 finals in his career. Rohit has won the World T20 in 2007 with India, the Champions League 2013 with Mumbai Indians, Asia Cup in 2006 with India and the Nidahas Trophy in 2018. Rohit repeated the feat in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020 to maintain his perfect record in the IPL final.
