Xtra Time Web Desk: With the IPL 2024 going on in full swing, BCCI has already begun informal discussions with franchise owners behind the scene, regarding changes for the upcoming mega-auction later this year. According to reports, a key topic of conversation is player retention.

Can the franchises retain eight players now?

Currently, teams can retain a maximum of four players, including two foreigners, before the mega-auction. They also have the option to use a 'Right-to-Match' card to retain one additional player. However, a majority of franchises seem to advocate for an increase in the number of players retention. The IPL 2025 mega auction might see franchisees retaining eight players instead of four.

Franchise proprietors hold differing views regarding a proposition to raise player retention limits before the upcoming IPL mega-auction. As per insider information, some owners advocate for a higher retention ceiling, asserting it would bolster team bonding and success by preserving a stable core player group, while others remain sceptical. Concerns and objections have been voiced, with specific details yet to be finalized, including the potential adjustment of retention limits for overseas players.

Salary caps to increase too?

Another point under discussion revolved around the salary cap, with some owners proposing a 10-crore increase, elevating the total to 100 crores INR. This adjustment aims to grant teams greater financial mobility in assembling their squads.

The forthcoming mega-auction stands as a pivotal juncture for franchises to secure top talent and establish a nucleus of players poised to drive future triumphs. The determinations made concerning player retention and salary caps will significantly influence the trajectory of the IPL in the years ahead. Teams like Rajasthan Royals epitomize the dividends of such an approach. In the 2022 auctions, they embarked on a fresh chapter with Sanju Samson as captain, strategically securing seasoned players like Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Trent Boult, alongside promising talents such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has since flourished as a key asset in the Indian national team. This emphasis on continuity has reaped rewards, with RR establishing a resilient core that consistently contends for success.

Conversely, the trajectory of Delhi Capitals serves as a cautionary tale. Once boasting a well-balanced roster blending domestic talents with international luminaries, they even reached the IPL finals in 2020. However, subsequent to the mega-auction, they struggled to replicate the same energy. The frequent upheavals in the lineup disrupted team chemistry, resulting in a series of lacklustre performances. This divergent narrative underscores the criticality of preserving a core capable of furnishing stability and nurturing achievements.
