AIFF Introduces New Format for Sub-Junior Boys’ and Girls’ National Championships

Xtra Time Web Desk: The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is set to introduce a revamped format for the Sub-Junior Boys’ and Girls’ National Championships, with the aim of strengthening grassroots development and creating a more effective pathway for identifying and nurturing young footballers.

The changes have been introduced in line with the format guidelines of the FIFA U-15 World Cup, with a focus on improving youth development and providing young players with an environment better suited to their age and development.

Under the new format, matches will be played in an 8-a-side format, with each game consisting of two 20-minute halves. There will be a five-minute interval between the two halves.

The playing field will measure 68 metres by 50 metres, while the goal size will be 7.32 metres by 2.44 metres. The offside line will be positioned at the 23-metre mark.

There will be no fixed limit on the number of substitutions. Players can be substituted during the match through the halfway line, without the need to stop play. However, the game will have to be stopped when a goalkeeper is being substituted.

The revised schedule will also provide players with adequate recovery time, with matches being played for two consecutive days followed by a one-day break.

Teams will be permitted to register a squad of up to 50 players. However, five days before the start of the tournament, each team must register a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 16 players for participation.

The AIFF believes the revised format will provide young footballers with greater opportunities to play, develop their skills and gain valuable match experience, while strengthening the country’s grassroots and youth development structure.
