Xtra Time Web Desk: Three time champions Spain were made to toil hard by a spirited Switzerland side as Luis Enrique’s side sealed a spot in the semi finals of EURO 2020 courtesy a 3-1 win on penalties at St Petersburg on Friday. Spain took the lead in the 8th minute after Denis Zakaria’s own goal. Xherdan Shaqiri scored the equalizer for the Swiss in the 68th minute. Switzerland was reduced to 10 men after Remo Freuler was flashed a red card. Mikel Oyarzabal struck the winning penalty for Spain after Switzerland's Ruben Vargas fired over the bar. Olmo and Moreno were the other goal scorers for Spain in the tie-breaker while Mario Gavranovic was on target for Switzerland. Spain will now face the winner of Belgium and Italy in the last four stages at Wembley next Tuesday.

Spain took the lead somewhat luckily as a big deflection off Denis Zakaria took Jordi Alba's shot past Yann Sommer in the 8th minute. Switzerland equalized in the 68th minute through Xherdan Shaqiri as he took advantage of a defensive howler. The Swiss were reduced to 10 men as Remo Freuler was flashed a red card for a rough tackle.

Mario Gavranovic gave the Swiss a 1-0 advantage in the tie-breaker after Sergio Busquests hit the bar. Rodri also failed to convert for Spain later on but misses from Fabian Schar, Manuel Akanji, and Ruben Vargas allowed Oyarzabal to book his side's place in the first semi-final at Wembley.
