Du Plessis has spent around nine seasons in the yellow jersey, while winning three IPL titles under Dhoni and the former South African skipper had the best seat in the house to watch him work. While opening about his time at CSK, du Plessis pointed out that Dhoni’s real genius lay in how he read pitch, the opposition, and his own bowlers in real time.

XtraTime Webdesk: Modern cricket runs on data sheets, matchup metrics, and endless team meetings. Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, though, didn't bother much about any of this. According to former Chennai Super Kings opener Faf du Plessis, the legendary captain’s biggest strength was ditching heavy pre-match planning and trusting his gut once he crossed the boundary rope.
Du Plessis has spent around nine seasons in the yellow jersey, winning three IPL titles under Dhoni. The former South African skipper had the best seat in the house to watch him work. Talking about his time at CSK, du Plessis said that Dhoni’s real genius lay in how he read the pitch, the opposition, and his own bowlers in real time.
"He doesn't like to plan too much beforehand and prefers to be instinctive during the match. That was his superpower," du Plessis shared. "He would read the game and the players while staying remarkably calm, as everyone knows he is a very composed person. That's something I want to take from him and apply to my own captaincy."
Captains usually panic when a set batter starts clearing the ropes; Dhoni famously kept it cool behind the stumps. For du Plessis, that ice-cold temperament paired with sharp on-field intuition is the ultimate leadership blueprint. Even as questions linger over whether Dhoni will take the field next season, his old-school, feel-for-the-game captaincy still stands tall.
