Lee Fortis finds himself in the spotlight again after fresh The Oval controversy

Lee Fortis, the oval groundsman who made headlines after his heated exchange with India head coach Gautam Gambhir during the 2025 England series, is once again at the centre of controversy.

Fortis was reportedly involved in an argument with an England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) employee on July 28 while preparing the ground for a Hundred match between MI London and London Spirit. This incident took an emotional turn out, with reports claiming the ECB employee was left in tears.

Soon after, Fortis was seen having a lengthy conversation with Surrey chief executive Steve Elworthy on the pitch before leaving the venue. According to the source report, Elworthy has not returned on The Oval since the incident. And this act of not showing up at the pitch has raised questions about his immediate future at the ground.

The latest controversy has inevitably brought back memories of his confrontation with Gambhir during the fifth Test between India and England at The Oval in July 2025.

That incident began over a, seemingly simple instruction. Fortis had asked members of the Indian coaching staff to stay 2.5 metres away from the main pitch square, despite them wearing suitable footwear. Gambhir was unhappy with the directive, and the disagreement quickly escalated into a heated exchange between the two. India eventually had the last word on the field, winning the Test and drawing the five-match series 2-2.

A year later, Fortis is again making headlines; but this time, it is not because of a confrontation with one of cricket's biggest names. His latest episode has instead raised fresh questions about his own position at The Oval.
