India batting legend Sunil Gavaskar paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Sir Garfield Sobers, describing him as "the greatest cricketer" and an inspiration to generations who dreamed of playing the game.
Sobers passed away on Friday, just 11 days before his 90th birthday, leaving the cricketing world in mourning. Expressing his grief, Gavaskar said:
"The greatest cricketer has fallen. This is probably the saddest day in cricket. No tribute is enough for Sir Garfield Sobers. You will live in our hearts forever."
Over a remarkable two-decade international career, Sobers redefined excellence with both bat and ball while setting new standards in fielding. Between 1954 and 1974, he played 93 Test matches, scoring 8,032 runs at an outstanding average of 57.78, including 26 centuries. The legendary all-rounder also claimed 235 Test wickets.
A naturally gifted cricketer, Sobers was unique in his versatility. Besides being an elegant left-handed batter, he was equally effective as a left-arm medium pacer, a left-arm orthodox spinner, and a left-arm wrist spinner. He was also regarded as one of the finest close-in fielders of his era.
In 1958, Sobers etched his name into cricket history by scoring an unbeaten 365 against Pakistan, setting the then world record for the highest individual Test score. The record remained unbeaten for 36 years.
He created another historic milestone in 1968, becoming the first cricketer to hit six sixes in a single over in first-class cricket while playing for Nottinghamshire in English county cricket. The feat came against Glamorgan's Malcolm Nash and remains one of the sport's most iconic moments.
Sobers was awarded a knighthood in 1975 for his extraordinary contribution to cricket. He was later named one of Wisden's Five Cricketers of the 20th Century, cementing his place among the game's immortals.
His legacy continues through the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy, presented annually by the ICC to the world's best men's cricketer across all formats. Though Sir Garfield Sobers is no longer with us, his impact on cricket will endure forever, inspiring generations to come.
