PM Modi leads tribute to hockey legend Balbir Singh Sr

XtraTime Web Desk: The sporting fraternity on Monday paid rich tributes to Indian hockey legend Balbir Singh Sr. who passed away in Chandigarh. The legendary hockey player from Punjab led India to three Olympic gold medals in 1948(London), 1952(Helsinki) and 1956(Melbourne). Balbir Singh Sr. still holds the world record for scoring the most goals by an individual in the men’s hockey final of the Olympics. The recipient of Padmashri award, Balbir Singh Sr was the only Indian among 16 legends chosen by the International Olympic Committee across modern Olympic history.
Leading the tribute to the legendary hockey player, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “Padma Shri Balbir Singh Sr. Ji will be remembered for his memorable sporting performances. He brought home lots of pride and laurels. Undoubtedly a brilliant hockey player, he also made a mark as a great mentor. Pained by his demise. Condolences to his family and well wishers.”
