While his team was knocked out of the Caribbean Premier League last night to Trinbago Knight Riders (St Lucia Zouks lost by 5 wickets), the plaque bearing the name of Sammy, captain of the reigning World T20 champions West Indies, was recently removed from the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium (earlier Beauseajour Cricket Stadium). The removal of the plaque from the stadium has invited widespread criticism from all corners in the island of St Lucia. The Department of Youth Development and Sports and Sports Saint Lucia Incorporated has quickly got into the act by reassuring the public that the temporary removal of the original plaque of the “Beauseajour Cricket Ground” was only undertaken as a consequence of the planning and logistical challenges experienced during the renaming ceremony of the “Daren Sammy Cricket Ground”. Any other interpretation made, is neither valid nor reliable, the department said in a statement. Both the plaques have been re-instated at the ground. Apart from the controversy surrounding the removal of the plaque, the Department of Youth Development and Sports and Sports Saint Lucia Incorporated is leaving no stone unturned to get many more fans to witness the third Test. So far, in the last two test matches in Antigua and Jamaica, the stands were generally empty. The ticket price has been reduced to an affordable $30 for the first 3 days and $40 for the last two days. The stadium will host its first test match after being renamed in Sammy's name. Joseph Perreira, the director of Saint Lucia Tourist Board, said, “We are expecting a good turn out on the opening day of the test match. There will be a lot of promotional events taking place over the weekend. We want our fans to give full support to our young cricketers who have put up a great show to draw the test match at Sabina Park.” [caption id="attachment_19607" align="alignnone" width="580"]St-Lucia The famous Beausejour hills and the lovely beaches of St Lucia will provide the perfect setting for the test match.[/caption] One can expect a good turnout at least for the first day of the test match at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium. The stadium which is also the home of Windward Islands cricket team located near Gros Islet can accommodate 15000 spectators. It staged its first international Test match in 2003 against Sri Lanka and became the first venue in the Caribbean to host a day-night game. The venue itself is a picturesque one with the Beausejour hills, the Pitons, on its west coast. The island of St Lucia is also known for its beaches and reef-diving sites, as well as its rain forested interior with waterfalls such as at Toraille. It is home to quiet volcanic beaches and fishing villages as well as luxurious resorts, and the capital, Castries, is a regular cruise ship stop. So, here's looking forward to bright sunshine and a great contest between bat and ball in St. Lucia.
