Kolkata: Former India footballer Renedy Singh feel a unified league will open up windows for the national team to play in more FIFA friendlies and give a shot at improving its ranking.

“Who would not like to see a merger. One league with more teams, more months is what we all wish for. Want to see a league that goes on for 8 months. It is difficult at the moment I feel. At least it will take another year or two to implement one league concept. What is the problem now is the players play in both leagues –as a result the U’19 boys hardly get an opportunity. If the players play only in ISL or I League then the U’19 players can have more opportunities to showcase their talent in I League and get an opportunity in ISL, ” said Renedy who is also the FPAI President.

The former footballer was at the Mohun Bagan ground today morning to see the Mariners train. A lot has improved in Indian football over the last few years, feel Renedy.

“A lot has improved since as the footballers are now sharing a much better relationship with the clubs,” said Renedy.

Asked who will be the top three contenders to win the I League, Renedy said, “East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Bengaluru FC are the top three contenders of I League. But it is too early to predict anything now as we have finished Round 1.”

Mohun Bagan’s fourth foreinger Eduardo Ferreira, who plied his trade with FC Pune City in the ISL has been signed by Mohun Bagan. The assistant coach of PC Pune City is confident that the Brazilian will gel well with the team.

“I think Eduardo will accustom to the football culture in the country. Having played in the Iranian League, I think he will quickly adjust to the conditions.”
