Xtra Time Web Desk: Star Indian cricketer Virat Kohli has reportedly returned home to Mumbai to attend to a family emergency, just days before the start of the two-match Test series against South Africa. Kohli, who was rested from the white-ball leg of the South Africa tour, sought permission from the team management to leave the ongoing intra-squad match in Pretoria. The nature of the emergency remains unclear, but Kohli is expected to rejoin the team in South Africa on December 22.

Kohli, having last played in the 2023 ODI World Cup final, where India suffered defeat, will make his return alongside captain Rohit Sharma for the two-Test series starting on December 26 in Centurion. Kohli's stellar World Cup performance included a record-breaking 765 runs from 11 matches, earning him the player-of-the-tournament award.

India, hopeful of creating history, has never won a Test series on South African soil. In the 2021-22 tour, they took a 1-0 lead before eventually losing 1-2 in the three-match series. The upcoming Test series is a crucial part of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship cycle, and India aims to secure a historic victory in South Africa.
