Mary Kom keeps mum about wrestler controversy at an event in Kolkata

Xtra Time Web Desk: Mary Kom, who was in charge of the oversight committee looking into allegations of sexual harassment against Wrestling Federation of India Chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, kept mum about the ongoing crisis. The champion boxer was in the city to attend an event. Country’s top wrestlers like Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia have been protesting on the streets against the WFI President.

The six-time world champion boxer will not have any chance to compete at Paris Olympics 2024 as she will not be eligible due to her age. The mother of three kids will turn 40 years old in November.

Asked whether she will compete at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, Mary Kom said, “This year I’ve a chance to compete in any competition. Next year by force, I’m not eligible.”

Despite her age, she would like to continue boxing for another 3-4 years, perhaps even trying to pursue a professional career.

“Nobody can stop me from fighting. I’m not eligible to fight in the Olympics because of the age limit. I’m very sorry for that. But I want to continue, keep fighting for another three-four years. I still have that confidence and willpower,” said Mary Kom.

She added, “I’m thinking, I can also become a pro. I’ve that confidence. Nobody can stop me from fighting.”
