IPL: Was called “Kalu”: Darren Sammy says he faced racism in India

XtraTime Web Desk: Former West Indies captain Darren Sammy on Saturday alleged that he was subjected to racist comments while he was playing the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Sammy played for Sunrisers in 2013 and 2014. The cricketer from St Lucia has been sharing his anger on social media platforms post the death of black American George Floyd, who succumbed to death after a white police officer knelt on his neck for nine minutes in Minneapolis.

The former T20 World Cup winning captain has admitted he too was subject to racist remarks during the IPL. He was called ‘Kalu’ which means Black during his stint in the cash rich league.

In a post shared on his instagram handle, Sammy alleged, “I just learnt what that ‘kalu’ meant when I played for Sunrisers in the IPL. They call me and Perera by that name. I thought it meant strong Stallion. My previous post tells me something different and I’m angry.”

The Caribbean all rounder did not revealed the exact timing when he faced these remarks or by whom.

“Oh so that’s what that meant when they called me and @tp_perera kalu in India when we played for Sunrisers. I just thought they were calling me strong black man… I’m more piss (sic) now,” Sammy wrote.

Sammy was one of the first cricketers from the Caribbean to voice his support for anti-racism. He along with Chris Gayle, Jason Holder and Andre Russell has condemned racism. Sammy has been supporting the ‘Black Lives Matter’ campaign around the world
