Xtra Time Web Desk: It was a truly fairytale beginning for Shamar Joseph’s test career as he scripted a miraculous win for West Indies in the second test match against Australia at the Gabba on Sunday. It has been an awe-inspiring journey for the 24-year-old cricketer from Baracara, a remote village in Guyana.
Shamar grew up in a family with five brothers and three sisters. His early life in Baracara, which was only accessible by a two-day boat trip up the Canje River to New Amsterdam. His village was devoid of modern conveniences like internet service until 2018.
Despite the hardships, Shamar was passionate about playing cricket. He would often play tape-ball cricket in his village. He had his share of struggles early in his life, having worked as a security guard to make a living. However, his love for the sport was too strong to ignore, and he made the bold decision to quit his job and pursue a career in cricket. The decision paid off as he got an opportunity to play first-class cricket for the Guyana Harpy Eagles in February 2023. An impressive performance earned him a spot in the West Indies A squad for the tour of South Africa.
His journey took a remarkable turn when he made his test debut against Australia, dismissing Steve Smith with his very first delivery in international cricket. No one would have hoped that Shamar will take the field on Day 4 after he was injured by a toe-crushing yorker from Mitchell Starc which forced him to leave the field. Shamar, displayed tremendous courage as he resiliently returned the following day to dismantle the Australian batting lineup, claiming 7/68 and contributing significantly to West Indies’ eight-run triumph.
This incredible feat has catapulted Shamar Joseph from the obscure realms of a security guard in Berbice to a leading contender for the ICC’s Test Cricketer of the Month.
