Xtra Time Web Desk: It was a truly fairytale beginning for Shamar Joseph’s test career as he scripted a miraculous win for West Indies in the second test match against Australia at the Gabba on Sunday. It has been an awe-inspiring journey for the 24-year-old cricketer from Baracara, a remote village in Guyana.

Shamar grew up in a family with five brothers and three sisters. His early life in Baracara, which was only accessible by a two-day boat trip up the Canje River to New Amsterdam. His village was devoid of modern conveniences like internet service until 2018.

Despite the hardships, Shamar was passionate about playing cricket. He would often play tape-ball cricket in his village. He had his share of struggles early in his life, having worked as a security guard to make a living.
