India at Tokyo Olympics: PV Sindhu sails into singles semi final after hard fought win against No 4 seed Yamaguchi

Xtra Time Web Desk: Ace Indian shuttler PV Sindhu produced yet another brilliant performance to enter the semi finals of badminton women’s singles at Tokyo Olympics on Friday. Sindhu got the better of No 4 seed Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi in straight games 21-13, 22-20 in 56 miuntes.

Sindhu had a comfortable win in the first game. But Yamaguchi came back strongly in the second game, resorting to long rallies. The strategy worked for the Japanese shuttler as Sindhu was forced to make some unforced errors. But it was the experience and net play by the Hyderabadi that saw her win a tensed battle.

Sindhu will face Tai Tzu Ying, who beat Intanon Ratchanok 14-21, 21-18, 21-18. The other semifinal is between Chen Yu Fei and He Bing Jiao, both of China

On Thursday, the World No. 7 Sindhu had got the better of World No. 12 Mia Blichfeldt 21-15, 21-13 in 41 minutes.  It was Sindhu’s fifth victory over the Danish shuttler in six encounters was also her easiest in terms of the points conceded. In the months leading to her World title in 2019, the lanky Indian beat Mia thrice.

Earlier in the year, Mia surprised Sindhu in three games in Thailand Open before the Indian avenged the loss in the Swiss Open in March.
