In pics: These bowlers have taken more than one hat-tricks in ODI’s

XtraTime Web Desk: Hat-tricks are rare in international cricket. As many as 49 cricketers have claimed a hat-trick in One Day cricket. Seven of them have had the distinction of claiming double hat-tricks in the 50 over format. Sri Lankan Laisth Malinga leads the pack with three hat-tricks in ODIs. Let us take a look at the seven bowlers who has claimed hat-tricks on more than one occasion in one day cricket:

Lasith Malinga

Slinga Malinga has achieved this feat on three occasions in one day international. Malinga’s first ODI hat-trick was against South Africa at the Providence stadium in Georgetown on March 28, 2007. In fact he took four wickets in four consecutive balls during the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean. He took the wickets of Shaun Pollock (bowled), Andrew Hall (caught by Upul Tharanga), Jacques Kallis (caught by Kumar Sangakkara) and Makhaya Ntini(bowled).

 

Malinga’s second ODI hat-trick was against Kenya at R Premadasa stadium on March 01, 2011. He had Tanmay Mishra leg before and bowled Peter Ongondo and Shem Ngoche. His third hat-trick was against Australia at the same venue on August 22, 2011. He picked the wickets of Mitchell Johnson (bowled), John Hastings (LBW) and Xavier Doherty (bowled).

Wasim Akram

The Sultan of Swing from Pakistan took two hat-tricks at Sharjah Cricket Stadium in a span of six months. His first hat-trick was against West Indies on October 14, 1989. He got the wickets of Jeff Dujon, Malcolm Marshall and Curtly Ambrose, having all three of them bowled. Akram’s second ODI hat-trick was against Australia in the final of Austral Asia Cup on May 04, 1990. He clean bowled Merv Hughes, Carl Rackemann and Terry Alderman.

Saqlain Mushtaq

The Pakistani off-spinner, who was famous for his doosra has two ODI hat-tricks in his name. The first one was against Zimbabwe at Arbab Niaz Stadium, Peshawar on November 03, 1996. Saqlain picked Grant Flower (caught behind Moin Khan), John Rennie(caught behind Moin Khan) and Andy Whittall (caught Salim Malik). Against the same opponents Saqlain picked another hat-trick at the Oval during the 199 ICC Cricket World on June 11. His dismissals included Henry Olonga (stumped Moin Khan), Adam Huckle (Stumped Moin Khan) and Pommie Mbangwa (LBW).

Chaminda Vaas

Sri Lankan left arm quick’s first hat-trick in ODIs was against Zimbabwe at Sinhalese Sports Club on December 08, 2001. He picked the wickets of Stuart Carlisle (caught Suresh Perera), Craig Wishart (LBW) and Tatenda Taibu (LBW). Vaas claimed his second hat-trick during the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup clash against Bangladesh at the Pietemaritzburg Oval on February 14, 2003. His dismissals include Hannan Sarkar (bowled), Mohammad Ashraful (caught and bowled) and Ehsanul Haque (caught Mahela Jayawerdene).

Trent Boult

This fast bowler from New Zealand took his first ODI hat-trick against Pakistan at Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Nov 07, 2018. His dismissals include Fakhar Zaman (bowled), Babar Azam (caught Ross Taylor) and Mohammad Hafeez (LBW). Boult picked his second ODI hat-trick during the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup against Australia at Lords on June 29. He took the wickets of Usman Khawaja (bowled), Mitchell Starc (bowled) and Jason Behrendorff (LBW).

Kuldeep Yadav

The chinaman bowler is the only Indian in the list. Kuldeep picked his first ODI hat-trick against Australia at Eden Gardens on Sep 21,2017. He took the wickets of Mathew Wade (bowled), Ashton Agar (LBW) and Pat Cummins (caught MS Dhoni). Kuldeep’s second ODI hat trick was against West Indies at ACA-VDCA stadium in Vishakapatnam on Dec 18, 2019. He got the wickets of Shai Hope (caught Virat Kohli), Jason Holder (stumped Rishabh Pant) and Alzarr Joseph (caught Kedar Jadhav)
