Kolkata: East Bengal’s experienced pro Mehtab Hossain has promised his fans about leaving the club if he fails to win the I League this season. Mehtab, who has been plying his trade at the East Bengal club for last one decade is yet to win the coveted trophy. The midfielder joined the club during the 2007-08 season.

“I promise that this will be my last season at East Bengal if we don’t win the league,” the former India midfielder told the scribes at the I-League launch event in New Delhi on Tuesday.

“This year is very important for me. For the last five years or so, we have come so close but could never win it. Football is a team game, yes, but not winning the trophy also makes me sad as I am not being able to help the team after getting that close,” he further added.

The hardworking midfielder has been in tremendous form this season, helping East Bengal win the Calcutta League for a record six times. He also played a pivotal role for Kerala Blasters in reaching the final of Indian Super League (ISL) this season.

On being asked whether he is mulling a retirement from football, the diminutive mid-fielder commented, “You get frustrated when you don’t win a trophy and the same is happening with me. I will not be retiring but I will not be continuing with East Bengal.”

Meanwhile Jackichand Singh and Robin Gurung have joined the training on Tuesday. Right wing half Jackichand Singh will be playing his first season for East Bengal. He will be joining the Red and Golds from Salgaocar. According to Jackichand, “I will try and give my best at East Bengal”

For Robin Gurung, it is a dream come true to be playing at East Bengal club. According to Gurung, “I have always dreamt of playing for East Bengal club since my childhood days. I hope to make the best of the opportunity at the East Bengal club.”

Robin, whose preferred position is to play in right back position, is open to playing in any position which Morgan suggests. The former Shillong Lajong right back said, “I have always played in the right back position. But if the coach suggests me a new position, I will try and adjust.”
