Shahid passed away this morning with a multiple organ failure he died in a hospital of Gurugram. The 56-year old former captain of Indian hockey team was admitted to the hospital of Gurugram early this month. He had dengue and jaundice. Finally feeling restless he was moved to Gurugram from Varanasi by air. “He breathed his last at 10:45 this morning. It was multiple organ failure that led to his passing away. He will be taken to Varanasi and last rites will be performed there tomorrow,” Shahid’s son Mohammed Saif said. Known for his brilliant dribbling skills, Shahid was considered one of India’s greatest hockey players. He was a member of the V. Baskaran-led Indian team that won a gold medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. He was also a part of the national team that won a silver medal at the Delhi Asian Games in 1982 and bronze in the Seoul Asiad in 1986. He captained the Indian team during 1985–86. He was later awarded the prestigious Arjuna Award and the Padma Shri. Known for his exceptional dribbling skills, Shahid had been hurt by the hockey world shutting him out from all schemes. He was hardly involved by his employer — Railways — for any coaching assignment related with the game and that had left the hockey great disillusioned. Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined the hockey fraternity and sports lovers in grieving Shahid’s death. “We tried our level best to save Mohammed Shahid but sadly, neither our help nor prayers were enough to save him. Tributes to him”, tweeted Prime Minister.

“He was quite young in 1980. He respected every one and had a jolly nature. His dribbling skills played a crucial part in India winning the gold. The whole world respected his excellent stick work. There was no one who could match him, whether it was a creating a penalty corner or firing a field goal,” said M. K. Kaushik, one of the closest friends of Md. Shahid. Even, Shah Rukh Khan too mourned on Mohammed Shahid's death. He tweeted, "Mohammad Shahid..My hero while growing up. He & Zafar Iqbal were magic! Met him during Chak De & I pray for his soul. Sir u will be missed."In the untimely & unfortunate demise of Mohammed Shahid, India has lost a talented sportsman who played with immense passion & vigour.

On the other hand, we denounce with righteous indignation and dislike men who are so beguiled and demoralized by the charms of pleasure of the moment
