Kolkata: World football legend Diego Armando Maradona enriched the holy soil of Sreebhumi Sporting Club, Kolkata in his trademark style on Monday. The Argentine genius was greeted with a touch of love, aura, emotion and elegance in front of a chock-a-block crowd. The legend was accompanied by his girlfriend Rocio Oliva and both of them seemed to be in complete surprise when the AV by Greymind Communication on Maradona’s career and his first visit at Kolkata back in 2008 was shown at the giant screen. Later a 12 ft statue of Diego Maradona’s World Cup winning moment of 1986 was unveiled by the legend himself.
The City of Joy were graced by the presence of the Prince of Football who came to visit the city for the second time and this time he will be staying for three days.
His first destination today was the Sree Bhumi Sporting Complex Club where MLA Sujit Bose greeted him by presenting bouquets, garlands and a gold bracelet.
Different scenes of Maradona’s golden career, to his visit to Kolkata in 2008 were shown on the stage. Maradona was filled with joy when he saw the video of his iconic goal of the 1986 World Cup against England.
After receiving such a warm reception, a joyful Maradona said, “I am not God of football but a simple footballer. Nothing more, I am just happy by being here”
Maradona also unveiled a 12 feet statue of himself which would be placed at V.I.P road along with that a park will also be named after the footballing great.
Along with that Maradona spent some time with cancer affected patients. He donated ten thousand rupees to 11 cancer patients for their treatment. He also unveiled an ambulance.
Before leaving he distributed footballs among the audience which contained his autograph.
“I am a Brazil supporter but I am big Maradona fan” said Sujit Bose after the conclusion of the event.
